Vassilis Karakatsanis was born in Athens, where he lives and works.
He studied Painting, Stage Design and Book Art at the Athens & Barcelona Schools of Fine Arts, with scholarships by the IKY, (Greek State Scholarship Foundation) & the Spanish Government. He also studied Maintenance of Architectural Monuments at the Centro Europeo of Venice, with a scholarship by the European Council, Italy. He has exhibited his work in solo shows in Greece, Cyprus, Spain, Italy, Indonesia, Germany and Ecuador, and participated in numerous group exhibitions and Art Fairs in Greece and around the world. His artworks, for which he has received several awards and distinctions, can be found in private and public collections, as well as in Museums and Cultural Foundations internationally.
His thematic choices and his personal artistic vocabulary are informed by his experience and observation of the surrounding world. There is strong theatrical attitude in his approach, transforming the mundane every day objects into structural elements of his work. He uses a clean and rich color palette along with vivid contrasts and sensitively researches the limits between reality and illusion.
