Two months after introducing us to St. Economy The Bankrupt, Greek artist Petros Christoulias returns to present us to St. Hesperia the Capitalist.
St. Hesperia moves along the conceptual axis that characterises Christoulias’s recent series of works – a humanized concept that audio-visually refers to Byzantine Iconography, resulting to the creation of Contemporary Saints, reflective of the issues we are globally facing today, and at the same time acting as visual commentaries. The socio-political comment is fully realized in the work’s subtitle. The Saint’s resemblance to Margaret Thatcher is anything but coincidental, since the iron lady fully embodies the image’s pun. St. Hesperia (literary term denoting Western Europe) could, of course, be nothing other than a capitalist!
