Controversial appointment

Vittorio Sgarbi, Italy’s former undersecretary of culture, celebrity art critic and all around famous for his resentment
towards contemporary art, was named curator of the Italian pavilion for the 2011 Venice Biennale. The appointment of
Sgarbi is dividing the Italian art world and has drawn strong criticism from many, among them his compatriot Francesco
Bonami (curator of this year’s Whitney Biennial) who said “Contemp¬orary art is to Sgarbi what America is to Bin Laden.

Once in a while Sgarbi, like Bin Laden, rants against his enemy” and feels that Italians, unfortunately, deserve him.
The Venice appointment is especially sensitive as Italy celebrates the 150th anniversary of its unification in 2011.

Sgarbi says that, although he already has several ideas, he has not yet decided how many artists are going to participate
and he still needs to finalize the whole concept. He adds however that “In my ideal pavilion, I would install just one work,
the Dead Christ by Mantegna (~1480) and next to it a photograph of Che Guevara on his death bed”. Without a doubt the
curator will not omit to provoke and experiment – we look forward to it!

The Imaginary Museum

The Dakis Joannou Collection will inaugurate the “Imaginary Museum” project - a new exhibition series at the New Museum (New York) which will periodically feature leading private collections of contemporary art from around the world, providing
the opportunity for great works of art to be seen by a broader public, while experimenting with different curatorial models
and furthering conversations about collaboration.

This is the first time that Joannou’s Athens-based collection, one of the very finest collections of contemporary art in the
world, will be seen in such a context. Joannou has worked closely with artists and curators over three decades to assemble
an unparalleled collection of iconic contemporary works, containing 1,500 works by 400 artists, with major concentrations
of works by Maurizio Cattelan, Urs Fischer, Jeff Koons, Chris Ofili and Kiki Smith, among many others.

Jeff Koons has been invited to curate the exhibition - his curatorial and artistic vision will, no doubt, bring a fresh perspective
to the Joannou Collection and to the works on view. We look forward to seeing it. Runs from March 3 to June 6.

Celebrating the Master

Michelangelo Merisi, alias Caravaggio (1571-1610) - master of light, shadow and emotion is back on center stage after 400
years. Scuderie del Quirinale presents a new and ambitiously "simple" exhibition focusing exclusively on the artist's "capital"
works; in other words, including only those works historically ascertained to be by the master's own hand.

The show brings together 24 paintings from museums across Europe and the United States of undisputed authenticity to
celebrate the 400th anniversary of the painter's death. The result is a consistent and stringent exhibition that sheds new
light on the various stages in the development of Caravaggio's tortured artistic career. The exhibition includes many of
Caravaggio's most representative works (Bacchus, David With the Head of Goliath, Lute Player, Amor Vincit) and other masterpieces and in many ways it is a tribute to the unique quality of Caravaggio's work.

Caravaggio, who died when he was 39, painted for 18 years and produced relatively few pieces. To June 13.

Size DOES matter!

Basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal is making his curatorial debut with the exhibition “Size DOES Matter” at the FLAG Art
Foundation. The exhibition includes works from international artists exploring the myriad ways that scale affects the
perception of contemporary art, boasting works from microscopic to giant pieces that have the ability to dwarf and
exaggerate everyone.

Large and small objects require different approaches, elicit unique responses from their viewer, and reflect the varying
purposes in which works of art were meant to serve. Every work in the show was selected by Shaq himself or is being
newly made at his request. The Curator did a great job picking some of the top names in the industry and selecting
some very relevant pieces.

Participating artists include Maurizio Cattelan, Andreas Gursky, Anselm Kiefer, Jeff Koons, Ron Mueck, Elizabeth Peyton
and Cindy Sherman among many others. Asked about how he picked the specific works, O’Neal said that “Art is a process
of delivering or arranging elements that appeal to the emotions of a person looking at it. It’s what you feel. I picked those
things because they were beautiful. The thing about size—if it’s big or small you have to look at it”. Catch it till May 27. http://www.flagartfoundation.org/current/

Henry Moore

Radical, experimental and avant-garde, Henry Moore (1898–1986) was one of Britain’s greatest artists. Tate Britain presents
a stunning exhibition that takes a fresh look at his work and legacy, presenting over 150 stone sculptures, wood carvings,
bronzes and drawings.

Moore rebelled against his teachers’ traditional views of sculpture, instead taking inspiration from non-Western works he
saw in museums. He pioneered carving directly from materials, evolving his signature abstract forms derived from the
human body. This exhibition presents examples of the defining subjects of his work, such as the reclining figure, mother
and child, abstract compositions and drawings of wartime London. Highlights of the show include a group of key reclining
figures carved in Elm, which illustrate the development of this key image over his career.

It is the most comprehensive survey of the work of Henry Moore in decades, tracing the British sculptor's career from when
he first emerged as an artist in the wake of the WWI, in which he served, to his death in 1986, and attempts to reassert his
position at the forefront of twentieth-century sculpture.

To August 8.

Group striptease

About 5,200 naked people embraced each other on the steps of Sydney's Opera House for Spencer Tunick’s latest photo
shoot, titled "Mardi Gras: The Base" - another signature installation of nudes against urban backdrops. The crowd was
asked to gather at 4am, to ensure the shoot was completed before the start of the working day. Participants were
instructed to pose in a variety of positions from lying down, standing up and embracing cheek to cheek.

People of all shapes, sizes and ages were among the crowd, including a heavily pregnant woman who had rescheduled
the birth of her twins in order to participate.

As a reward for their participation the models will receive a print of Tunick's finished photograph. Tunick has produced
almost 100 installations around the world, and says his work is not about exhibitionism or eroticism but is about revealing
the vulnerability of life in a rough city landscape (despite the persuasive argument, Tunick has been arrested seven times
in the United States because of his work). His largest installation was in Mexico in 2007, where he photographed 18,000
people In Mexico city's Zocalo Square.
